Historically, hoodoo practitioners were called to heal physical ailments, defend enslaved people, and retrieve lost objects. But, unfortunately, their work was also sometimes directed toward retaliation or revenge. Eventually, hoodoo evolved into folk magic in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although most hoodoo practitioners are Christians, many do not adhere to a specific religious belief. Instead, they use various magical practices, including rootwork, to perform spells. To use a hoodoo, a person must consult with spirits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russian Witchcraft Accusations Fell On Itinerant Folks<\/span><\/h2>\n

Unlike modern-day Russia, witchcraft accusations were disproportionately male. Women were ensconced in homesteads, and most of those with sex were husbands or wives. This is not to mention the likes of a men’s club. The male-dominated duo of the hare and the hounds of hell were the most egregious offenders. The only time females were allowed to mingle was on the weekends and at church. Those lucky enough to secure a spot in the ladies’ quarters were treated with respect. Those with a male mantle were subject to a bit of attention from the ladies. There were a few notable exceptions. The biggest challenge to a successful female pairing was attrition. The best bets were lucky bets. Although women were not in short supply, their presence was not always good. A few noteworthy females survived the ensuing sex wars and were rewarded with the lion’s share of spousal piety. A few of these lucky few could secure a place in the marital bed for the rest of their days. This is not to say that the hares did not enjoy a few moments of freedom. Nevertheless, it should be no surprise that they were a bit more tolerant of the women in their midst.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tidbits of a tale were few and far between and were most likely penned by the more than privileged. But, it is safe to say that witches had their little corner of the mantle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baba Yaga Story<\/span><\/h2>\n

Traditionally, Baba Yaga is the mother and witch of Russian folklore. However, there are many versions of the story. The most famous version is Vasilissa the Beautiful, a tale about a girl abused by her wicked stepmother. When her father leaves for business trips, her stepmother abducts her and sends her to visit Baba Yaga.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most famous Baba Yaga story is the one that introduces the mythological figure to the English reading public in the late nineteenth century. The Red Fairy Book (1890) introduced the tale of the witch to young English readers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The character of Baba Yaga is an influential figure. She plays a vital role in helping protagonists reach their goals. In this way, she also catalyzes change. Her ambiguous nature is associated with her femininity. This aspect of her nature may be linked to her being a witch. Nevertheless, Baba Yaga is not an evil character. Instead, she acts, following her desires unconsciously.<\/span><\/p>\n

A more elaborate treatment of the witch’s tale can be found in the book Baba Yaga: The Ambiguous Mother and Witch of Russian Folklore by Andreas Johns. This work also describes Baba Yaga’s ambiguous nature in a more feminist way.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to being a cannibal, Baba Yaga is a trickster. She is usually said to have a long nose and iron teeth. She can speak as stone, and sometimes, she can also be a rudder. She often gets her way in these stories, though in other cases, she does not.<\/span><\/p>\n

She is a witch living in a house perched on giant chicken legs. The hut is near a small village, and the people fear it. The door to the hut will not open<\/a> until a magical phrase is spoken.<\/span><\/p>\n
